Varadero is a few hours drive from Havana. There is a closer beach to Havana but Varadero is ranked as one of the best beaches in the area so I thought it would be better to go here… and it was. We also visited a couple of caves which made the trip even more worth it. The bottom line is that Yolly enjoyed the beach so it was worth the long ride. The first cave was the Bellamar caves. The caves are filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, krastic crystals, underground stream, fountains, crystallized domes and some other unique limestone formations. Indigenous paintings and fossils have also been found here. The explored area is 3 km (1.9 mi) long and contains 28 rooms; the area open to visitors is about 1 km (0.6 mi) long.
We then went to the other cae on the tour – the Saturno’s Cave which was a smaller cave but had a stream running through it. I can’t understand why I did not chose to swim in it except that now I really regret not doing it.
We then went to a local restaurant for lunch. I can’t believe how expensive the lunch was but because we ended up splitting an entree which had 2 fried fish it ended up not being too outrageous. I think Yolly had a Cuba Libre at this resto instead of the usual mojito.
Then it was off to the beach for a couple of hours.
And then back to the hotel…
The rest of the album is here.
